AR Experience

Overview

Our AR component, led by Sejeong and Bella, serves as a dynamic showcase of key locations within the narrative, designed to immerse users more deeply in the story’s environment. Access begins when a user opens our book-shaped box—one of several physical artefacts—and scans the QR code on the AR Access Ticket, then points their camera at the opened box to activate the interactive scene in Adobe Aero. By tapping or moving their device, users can reveal additional story details and hints about where to explore next, creating a seamless bridge between tactile items and digital storytelling.

Initial Concept

Displayed on the right is our original storyboard, outlining an early plan for a fully animation-driven AR sequence. The idea was to let users watch short, carefully choreographed transitions that revealed each location or event in the narrative. However, we shifted away from this approach, deciding it would be more engaging to let users interact with on-screen elements themselves—tapping on visuals to uncover additional lores. Although the fully animated concept was set aside, this storyboard remains a meaningful record of how we initially imagined bringing the story to life through fluid scene transitions and atmospheric artwork.

Tool Selection

Adobe Aero was chosen for its straightforward interface, which allowed us to add layered visuals, animations, and on-tap interactions without extensive coding. The QR code mechanic further simplified user access: once scanned, it launches the AR scene, eliminating the need for manual file downloads or complicated installation steps.

Visual Art

Our illustrator, Bella, created the subdued, grungy illustrations that give this AR experience a dreamlike quality, matching our narrative’s sombre tone. When the AR launches, images converge and then disperse, demonstrating how hidden details gradually emerge. This approach places the environment at the heart of the storytelling, prompting users to notice subtle visual cues tied to deeper themes.

Trigger

Among our physical artefacts is a book-shaped box. Users begin by scanning its QR code, then opening their camera and pointing it at the opened box. This action triggers the AR overlay, blending the tangible object with the digital narrative. The box thus acts as a real-world gateway into the immersive realm.

Interactive Elements

Within the AR scene, tapping on objects reveals extra lore about specific locations and characters. Occasional on-screen prompts encourage users to adjust their viewing angle for optimal clarity. By actively exploring, participants uncover layers of narrative detail at their own pace, further merging the physical and digital worlds into a unified experience.

AR Access Ticket

After designing our animations and interactive elements, we generated a QR code and placed it on a specially made ticket. By scanning the code on this ticket, users can seamlessly enter the AR experience, demonstrating how we integrated physical artefacts with our digital storytelling approach.
