Book Box

Overview

As one of our main physical artifacts, the book box served as a tactile entry point into the world of The Underworld Collective. Intended to be both symbolic and functional, it was designed to trigger the AR experience embedded in our narrative. The process of building the box was led by Bella, and involved conceptual, sculptural, and illustrative phases that allowed the object to embody both narrative and interaction.

Concept & Symbolism

Bella sketched out early concepts of pomegranate motifs and book-like forms, leaning into the mythological symbolism of Persephone. These visual ideas helped set the tone for the artifact’s look and meaning. The pomegranate, central to the myth, became the focal point of the cover—visually tying the story’s central themes to the object itself. One sketch in particular became the guiding reference for the final clay structure, balancing elegance with subtle decay.

Material & Construction Process

We explored several fabrication options, including cardboard and laser-cut wood, but ultimately chose white air-dry clay for its texture and sculptural flexibility. To ensure durability while keeping the box lightweight, we built a foundation using aluminium foil, then layered clay on top. As the clay dried, natural crackling occurred—resulting in a surface that resembled an aged, water-damaged book, perfectly suited for a story rooted in secrecy and timeworn myths. The pomegranate on the cover was sculpted separately and attached after painting, reinforcing the visual symbolism without compromising

Surface Treatment & Colour Palette

A limited, cohesive palette was used—primarily earthy browns, muted golds, and a deep crimson for the pomegranate seeds. These tones were carefully chosen to evoke decay, age, and a sense of buried history. Painting amplified the “book-like” appearance, and helped visually unify the vines, spine, and organic curves of the piece. Originally fragile, the pomegranate seeds were removed, repainted, and reattached with stronger adhesive for improved durability and contrast.

Functionality

The book box functions as the physical trigger for our AR experience. After scanning a QR code, users point their camera at the opened box to launch a scene. This physical-to-digital interaction mirrors the thematic journey of our narrative—inviting users to open something old and mysterious in order to uncover hidden layers of meaning.

Role in the Narrative

Narratively, the book box represents both containment and revelation. It acts as a physical embodiment of Persephone’s internal conflict—trapped by expectation, yet reaching for freedom. As users engage with the object, they are also stepping into her world, quite literally uncovering secrets by lifting the lid. This interaction allows the story to unfold through both touch and sight, bridging the physical and digital in a way that feels intimate, layered, and intentional.
